Summary
A US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Number is mandatory for business entities operating vehicles greater than 10,000 pounds in 39 US states. An MC Number, also known as a Motor Carrier Number, is a unique identifier assigned to business entities performing work outside of their registered state (also known as conducting interstate commerce).
Trux requires haulers performing work on the Trux platform in states who require it to submit and maintain a valid USDOT and/or MC number. We have released new features that make it easier for dispatchers to ensure they are assigning work to haulers with these valid numbers.
Work Assignment Verification
When assigning work to a hauler with an expired, invalid, or suspended USDOT Number, you will receive the following alert message.
You will also see a visual indication via color-coded icon indicating haulers with expired or invalid USDOT Numbers in the Fleet section of the DISPATCH screen.
The following will be displayed for haulers for whom the USDOT number has been validated but has returned a disallowed or suspended status from the USDOT.
If a dispatcher attempts to assign interstate work to a hauler (e.g., the work origin or destination state differs from the hauler’s registered state) and the hauler has a valid MC Number, the assignment is allowed. Otherwise, if a dispatcher attempts to assign interstate work to a hauler without a valid MC Number, they will receive the following alert message.
There may also be scenarios where haulers perform work in states that do not require/make use of USDOT. If a hauling entity is in a non-USDOT state and does not have a USDOT then, these haulers will be displayed with the following rollover text:
USDOT and MC Number Reporting
We have created a new USDOT tab on the REPORTS screen where dispatchers can see when and how many times attempts were made to assign work to haulers with missing, invalid, or suspended USDOT or MC numbers.
- Click the REPORTS screen, and go to the USDOT tab.
- Click the filter icon to filter results by assignments, shifts, and/or by status.
- View the status of each assignment attempt.
- Click EXPORT to export the filtered resorts as a CSV file.
How Trux Verifies USDOT Numbers
- The Trux Platform validates a hauler’s USDOT number with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. During this validation process, if a hauler has a Motor Carrier Number, then this will be retrieved and inputted into the Trux Platform for use.
- The Trux Platform performs a two stage validation: Stage 1 – At the time work is being assigned; and Stage 2 – At the time of Punch In. The two stage validation is to ensure that the Hauler has the right credential at the time of assignment, and at the time of punch-in.
- The validation logic used by Trux for Stage 1 and 2.
Validation Rule | Is hauler opeerating in a state that uses USDOT? | Is hauler performing intrastate work? | Result | USDOT # Needed | MC # Needed |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
SCENARIO #1 | Yes | Yes | Intrastate Work | Yes | No |
SCENARIO #2 | Yes | No | Interstate Work | Yes | Yes |
SCENARIO #3 | No | Yes | Intrastate Work | NA | No |
SCENARIO #4 | No | No | Interstate Work | Yes | Yes |
- Trux validates all haulers’ USDOT Numbers weekly on a Sunday.
- Validation is based on the hauler’s registered state. Any work conducted outside of the hauler’s registered state is considered Interstate work.
- States that do not use the USDOT Number as part of their Operating Authority include: AR, IL, LA, MS, NH, NM, ND, RI, SD, TN, VT, and VA.
What Haulers See
Haulers are made aware of a missing or invalid USDOT number on the Home screen in Trux Drive as shown below.
They are also alerted to missing or invalid USDOT and MC Numbers when attempting to claim, accept, and/or assign work.
Finally, haulers are alerted to missing or invalid USDOT and MC Numbers when punching in to work.
